On December 1st 1956, Caneel Bay Resort and the Virgin Islands National Park opened simultaneously. Founder Laurance S. Rockefeller's goal when creating these two entities, was to preserve and enhance the extraordinary natural beauty of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, while establishing a development plan which would significantly contribute towards the long-term well-being of the local community.
Following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017, the Resort and St. John were devastated and opening Caneel Bay was impossible. Since then, efforts are being diligently undertaken with Federal and local authorities to attend to the business realities necessary to rebuild Caneel Bay, recognizing that this is critical to both the employment and the overall economic health of the U.S. Virgins Islands.
View RoomsIn determining the future of Caneel Bay, Laurance Rockefeller’s legacy will be central to the planning process. The low-impact, mid-century modern style of the architecture will remain and the interior design will capture elements of the natural environment. Sustainability practises aimed at reducing the carbon footporint of the Resort will feature in every decision made.
While plans are coming together and a time-line towards re-opening established, Caneel Bay is closed through to the end of 2019 and further updates will be made available in the coming months. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and understanding.
